Among various compounds, metal borides generally exhibit better high-temperature performance compared to metal carbides. For example, Titanium Diboride (TiB2) ceramic products are more suitable for use in high-temperature, highly erosive environments than titanium carbide (TiC) and tungsten carbide (WC) ceramic products. Titanium diboride powder is gray (or gray-black) in color and ranks sixth among the world's top ten materials with the highest melting points. It has an oxidation resistance temperature of up to 1100°C in air. As a new type of ceramic material, it possesses excellent physical and chemical properties. In addition to having an extremely high melting point, it also has great hardness, chemical stability, conductivity, thermal conductivity, and exceptional mechanical properties at high temperatures.
The characteristics of titanium diboride as both a structural and functional material are as follows:
As a structural material: The high strength and hardness of titanium diboride allow it to be made into tools, drawing dies, sandblasting nozzles, and other hard tool materials. It can also serve as an additive in composite materials.
As a functional material: The electrical resistivity of titanium diboride is similar to that of pure iron, making it very promising for functional applications. By utilizing its electrical properties, titanium diboride can be used to make flexible Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) materials.
Applications:
1. Hot-pressed composites of excellent electrical conductivity, e.g. evaporation boats (TiB2-BN or TiB2-BN-AlN) for continuous aluminum metallizing
2. Crucible material for non-ferrous metals (Al, Cu, Mg, Zn, etc.)
3. Hot-pressed TiB2 armor plates
4. Cutting tools and cermets, used for machining aluminum
5. Metal Matrix composites (MMCs)
