Product Description

Product Description

Boron carbide (chemical formula B4C) is one of the hardest artificial abrasives known, second only to diamond. It has a Mohs hardness of 9.36, a Vickers hardness ranging from 5400 to 6300 kg/mm², a specific gravity of 2.52, and a melting point of 2450°C. It is highly resistant to both high and low temperatures and is chemically inert to strong acids and bases. Due to its exceptional grinding efficiency and non-magnetic properties, it is considered an ideal substitute for diamond.

High-purity boron carbide is an advanced inorganic non-metallic material with a variety of superior characteristics. It is classified into different grades based on application, including abrasive grade, nuclear grade, precision engineering ceramics grade, chemical grade, and refractory grade. Boron carbide is known for its chemical stability, low density, high hardness, and semiconducting properties. With high grinding efficiency and no magnetism, it is widely regarded as a viable diamond alternative.

Currently, Boron Carbide is used in the following main areas:

  1. Abrasives: Utilized for grinding, polishing, and drilling of various hard metals, alumina, and glass materials.

  2. Sintered Components: Used to manufacture nozzles, alignment tools, grinding disks, bearing support surfaces, support frames for aircraft, instrumentation components, armored panels for fuel tanks, and bulletproof vests.

  3. Nuclear Industry: The B10 isotope in boron carbide has a high neutron absorption cross-section and, with a theoretical boron content of 77.28%, combined with a high melting point (about 2450°C), makes it particularly suitable for use as a neutron absorber.

  4. Precursor Material: Serves as a raw material for the production of other boron compounds such as boron halides, boron nitride, metal borides, elemental boron, and boranes.

  5. Energy Applications: In addition to hydrogen and boron, boron carbide is considered a high-energy compound. Recent studies suggest its potential application in high-temperature hotspot conversion, and it may be used in powder form as a solid fuel. These are just a few of the many possible uses of boron carbide, and further research and development are expected to uncover additional applications.
